Question 1

What kind of image generation tasks can I automate with Switchboard Canvas?

Accepted Answer

Switchboard Canvas lets you generate images programmatically via API, which means you can automate the creation of visual content whenever data changes or events occur in your connected systems. Common automations include generating images on demand when records are created or updated, batch-creating multiple images from lists of data, or triggering image generation as part of larger workflows that pull data from one system and push results to another. The API approach means image creation happens in the background without manual step-by-step work.

Question 2

How does data move between Switchboard Canvas and other tools in my workflow?

Accepted Answer

Switchboard Canvas connects via API, so data flows in as parameters you send to the image generation request (text, colors, dimensions, or other inputs), and generated images flow out as files or URLs your automation can store or forward to other systems. If you're pulling data from a separate source system to feed into Canvas, your automation platform handles the data extraction and mapping, then passes those values to Canvas, which returns the created image for you to save, email, or post elsewhere. The API-based structure means Canvas integrates into larger multi-step workflows rather than operating in isolation.

Question 3

What breaks or causes problems when automating image creation with Switchboard Canvas?

Accepted Answer

Common issues include mismatched or missing API parameters (if your automation doesn't send required fields, image generation fails), file size or format limits that prevent downstream tools from accepting the output, and API rate limits if you're generating large batches of images in short timeframes. Another gotcha is assuming generated images are automatically stored or accessible forever without defining where they should be saved or retained. Testing your automation with sample data and confirming the generated image format and size work with your downstream systems before going live prevents most failures.

Question 4

How should I structure my Switchboard Canvas setup so automations run reliably?

Accepted Answer

Define your image templates, required inputs, and output format upfront before building automations around Canvas, so your automation knows exactly what parameters to send and what to expect back. Document which fields in your source data map to which Canvas API parameters, and validate that your automation can access Canvas (API credentials stored securely) and that generated images have a clear destination (cloud storage, email, another system). Consider running a small test automation first with a subset of your data to confirm the full flow works before automating against your entire dataset.
