Question 1

What manual tasks in Silverfin can be automated when connected to other tools?

Accepted Answer

Data entry and document population are the primary candidates for automation. When Silverfin is connected to accounting systems or data sources via API, incoming records can be automatically mapped into Silverfin fields, reducing manual input of figures, dates, and reference information. Document generation workflows can also be triggered based on data changes or completion of milestones within Silverfin, pushing completed reports or statements to downstream systems without manual export and re-entry.

Question 2

How does data move between Silverfin and other business tools?

Accepted Answer

Silverfin's API allows data to flow in both directions through automated workflows. Incoming data from accounting platforms or spreadsheets can be written into Silverfin workpapers and records through scheduled syncs or event-triggered automations. Completed documents and extracted data can be pulled out of Silverfin and sent to storage systems, communication platforms, or other reporting tools. The structure of your Silverfin workspace (fields, sections, and templates) determines what data can be reliably mapped during these transfers.

Question 3

What breaks when automating Silverfin workflows?

Accepted Answer

Schema mismatches are the most common issue: if field names, data types, or required structure change in Silverfin, automations may fail silently or populate data into incorrect locations. Permissions and access controls can also block automated workflows if the connected account lacks write or read access to specific workspaces or records. Additionally, custom formulas or conditional logic within Silverfin templates may not be compatible with incoming automated data, causing calculation errors or missed validations.

Question 4

How should I organize Silverfin to make automations work reliably?

Accepted Answer

Use consistent field naming and standardized templates across all workspaces so automations can predictably map incoming data. Document the exact structure of required fields, validation rules, and dependencies before building automated workflows. Assign automation-specific accounts with clearly defined permissions rather than using personal user accounts. Test automations against a sandbox or template workspace first to confirm data flows correctly before running them against live records.
