Question 1

What kind of manual work around Chatter can we automate?

Accepted Answer

You can automate posting updates to Chatter feeds when specific events occur in connected systems, such as when a record changes status or a new item is created. You can also automate notification routing by having the platform post messages to relevant Chatter groups or individuals based on triggers. However, Chatter itself is a collaboration space rather than a data processing tool, so automation typically focuses on pushing notifications and summaries into Chatter rather than automating work within Chatter conversations.

Question 2

How does data flow between Chatter and other business tools?

Accepted Answer

Data flows into Chatter through automated posts or messages triggered by events in other systems, such as a new record creation or status update. You can send structured information, links, or summaries to Chatter feeds or direct messages. Data flows out of Chatter less commonly, since conversations are primarily for collaboration and context; however, you can capture mentions or reactions from Chatter and log them back to your primary records if needed through custom integrations.

Question 3

What breaks or causes problems when automating with Chatter?

Accepted Answer

Automated posts that lack clear context or go to the wrong Chatter group can create noise and reduce adoption. Posting too frequently or without filtering can overwhelm users. Automations may fail if Chatter groups or members are deleted or renamed, so you need to monitor group structure changes. Also, Chatter has rate limits on post volume; excessive automated posting in short time windows can be throttled by the platform.

Question 4

How should we organize Chatter groups to make automations reliable?

Accepted Answer

Create dedicated Chatter groups for specific workflows or processes, then configure automations to target those groups consistently by group name or ID. Use clear naming conventions so team members understand what each group is for and why they receive automated posts. Limit group membership to stakeholders who actually need the notifications, and document which automations post to each group to prevent confusion when troubleshooting. Assign a group owner to manage membership and keep the group active so automations don't break due to group deletions.
